Life
of human beings is very short while the history of civilizations is very
long. But this history of mankind is full of works of art that I always
considered immortal. As early as the 1950's, I discovered what I called
Ğmy free spaceğ, a space devoid of any rules, limitations or constraints
of any kind. Since then, I never stopped cultivating this idea, looking
for new spaces for freedom and expression. This culture of freedom, more
than a specific style, rather a state of mind or a way of life, sent me
on a long adventure of a most passionate quest: An amazing evolution in
the free exploration of space with the simultaneous use of abstraction and
figuration; the free exploration of forms and movements in in such themes
as dance, fashion and sports; and the free exploration of human experience
in myths and history with historical and spiritual themes, just to name
a few.
I also have an ambitious dream to paint human history on a gigantic roll
which can one day be unrolled to reveal some of its most stunning moments.
My belief in art allows me to believe in the victory of goodness over the
evil side of human nature. At all times and in all places, man has created
artistic masterpieces. But also, at all times and in all places, man has
turned predator toward his fellow man.
I wanted to paint everything, even massacres and genocides, not
out of a perverse complicity, but in order to break the silence that covers
their perpetuation in history. I explored the myths of Greek paganism
as well as all the iconography of Christianity. There again I found a depiction of the
infinite variety of human emotions, from the highest peaks of ecstasy to
the lowest levels of cruelty.
Above all, I would like my work to remain an ode to the beauty of humanity as well as the physical beauty of
bodies, faces, gestures and movements.
May my work always offer a pleasure for the eyes, and have hearts vibrate
along with it.
