Venetian
art greatly impressed Omiros. The finesse, the beauty and subtlety
of colors and forms of Venetian art is epitomized in the Venetian
Masks. The ephemerous manifestation of the masks in the Carnival has
inspired Omiros to depict a semi-abstract representation of figures
wearing Venetian masks as seen in this gallery.
Omiros
devoted all his attention in the faces, neglecting partly the details
of the outfits of the disguised individuals, despite the fact that
these outfits are very colorful, impressive and full of imagination.
However, what is greatly emphasized is the beauty in the mystery of
the masked faces. The impression of emptiness of the eyes is especially
overwhelming. At the sight of these eyes, the imagination is greatly
stimulated by the attempt on the part of the observer to fill this
void by novels of human experience and emotions. The eyes being the
windows to the Soul, this emptiness leaves the observer with a stunning
amazement.
Such
empty eyes have already been observed in Byzantine Art. Omiros interpreted
this influence in some of his Byzantine paintings. See the
Prophet.
