Life
of human beings is very short while the history of civilizations is very
long. But it is full of works of art that I always considered immortal.
As early as the 1950's, I discovered what I called Ğmy free spaceğ, a space
devoid of any rules, limitations or constraints of any kind. Since then,
I never stopped cultivating this idea, looking for new spaces for freedom.
This culture of freedom, more than a specific style, rather a state of mind
or a way of living, sent me on an adventure of a passionate quest: The inevitable
evolution in the free exploration of space (with the simultaneous use of
abstraction and figuration); the free exploration of forms and movements
in danse, fashion and sports; and in the free exploration of myths and history
with historical and spiritual themes.
I also have an ambitious dream to paint this human history on a gigantic
roll which can one day be unrolled to reveal some of the most stunning moments.
My belief in art allows me to believe in the victory of goodness over the
evil side of human nature. At all time and in all places, man has created
artistic masterpieces. But also, at all times and in all places, man has
turned predator toward his fellow man.
I wanted to paint everything, even massacres and genocides, not out of a
perverse complicity, but in order to break the silence that covers their
perpetuation. I explored the myths, those of Greek paganism as well as those
of Christianity. There again I found a depiction of the infinite variety
of human emotions, from the highest peaks of ecstasy to the lowest levels
of cruelty.
Above all, I would like my work to remain as an ode to the beauty of human
bodies, faces and gestures.
May it offer the pleasure of having eyes to look at it, and a heart to vibrate
with it.
